Baby Yoga – Top 10 Asanas

Have you heard about baby yoga? If not, then you must definitely try practicing these unique baby yoga tips at home. Baby yoga is a unique combination of poses which develops the playful interaction between the child and the mother.

Baby yoga includes a series of yoga poses which includes baby massage, relaxation of the baby as well as the mother and stretching. It includes gentle body strokes and is beneficial for all babies to keep them healthy and happy.

Following are the list of poses which are included in baby yoga module. Follow the poses as well the step by step instructions and get started:

1. Stretch Pose: Gentle Body Stretches For Hands, Legs, Shoulders And Arms.

  • Sit on the floor with your legs spread straight in front of you. Move your legs 5-6 inches apart from each other.
  • Place a soft cushion in between your legs near your knee region. Place your baby on his back on the cushion to ease the pose.
  • Start massaging your baby starting from his head to toe. One can even stretch his hands and legs diagonally (whichever way you find it comfortable).
  • While massaging your child, slightly lean forwards so that it becomes easier for you to massage your baby.
  • Once you are done, release from the pose and relax.

2. Pavanmuktasana: Wind Releasing Pose:

  • Sit on the floor with your legs spread straight in front of you. Move your legs 5-6 inches apart from each other.
  • Place a soft cushion in between your legs near your knee region. Place your baby on his back on the cushion to ease the pose.
  • Lift up your baby’s legs in the upward direction. One can lift up one leg at a time.
  • Massage the legs from thighs in the downwards direction. Press it gently towards their stomach. (Do not give any kind of strain)
  • Repeat this activity for 2-3 times.
  • Relax.

3. Rolling On The Floor Pose: Hip Opener Exercise For The Baby:

  • Sit on the floor with your legs spread 4-5 inches apart. Place a soft cushion in between your legs and keep your baby over the cushion.
  • Gently fold your baby’s legs from the knees and place them gently over his/her stomach.
  • Hold your baby from his waist and turn him gently towards the left side and then towards the right.
  • Repeat this activity 5 times.
  • Relax.

4. Pavanmuktasana for moms: Wind Releasing Pose for Moms and Babies.

  • Lie down on the floor on your back.
  • Bend your legs from the knees and place them on your stomach. Press them gently on your stomach.
  • Lift up your baby in your hands and place him on your legs downwards from the knees.
  • Perform rolling activity. Bring your baby closer to you as you press you legs on to your stomach. Lift up your head as you baby comes closer.
  • Go back and try to straighten your legs. Repeat the same activity again.
  • One can even sing nursery rhymes and songs to keep the baby engaged and happy.
  • Relax.

5. Butterfly pose:

  • Sit on the floor with your legs spread straight out in front of you.
  • Bend your legs from the knees and join them together in such a way that sole of both the feet touch each other.
  • Keep your baby on your feet in a comfortable position.
  • Hold your baby’s hands.
  • Try to stretch your legs this way.
  • Relax.

6. Setu Bandh: Bridge Pose

  • Lie down on the floor on your back.
  • Fold your legs from your knees and place the sole of your feet on the floor.
  • Move your legs slightly forwards.
  • Place your hands on the floor besides your body with palms touching the ground.
  • Lift up your upper body, chest and the waist off the floor.
  • Keep your head on the ground.
  • Lift up your baby in your hands and place him on your stomach.
  • Remain steady for 10-15 seconds. One can even sing out rhymes and songs to entertain the baby.
  • Relax

7. Tadasana: Mountain Pose:

  • Stand on the floor in a straight position.
  • Join your hands in prayer position; bring them in front of the chest.
  • Raise your hands upwards towards the ceiling and stretch them.
  • As you raise your hands upwards, you have to hold your baby in your hands.
  • At the same time lift up your body and try to balance your body on your toes.
  • Look upwards towards your baby, smile and call out his/her name.
  • Place your feet on the floor and return to normal state.
  • Repeat this activity 5 times every day
  • Relax.

8. Virbhadrasana: The Warrior Pose:

  • Stand on the floor in a straight position.
  • Move your feet 4-5 inches apart from each other.
  • Turn your right leg to 90 degrees on the right side & accordingly turn your left leg in the same direction & stretch it.
  • Hold your baby in your hands.
  • Raise your hands up in the air. Stretch them. Look upwards towards your baby.
  • Keep your back straight.
  • Come back to the first position.
  • Relax.

9. Adho Mukha Svanasana: Downward Facing Dog Pose:

  • Stand on the floor in a straight position.
  • Bend your body downwards from your hips until your hands reach your toes.
  • Lower your body from your hips and place your hands on the ground in front of your feet.
  • Move your feet backwards and lower your body a little.
  • The whole body’s weight should be balanced properly on the hands & legs.
  • The final position of this asana becomes like the shape of ‘V’.
  • Place your baby in the centre of your hands and feet. Look towards your baby, smile and sing out songs for him. At the same time stretch your body.
  • One can even keep their baby in front of them.
  • Remain steady for some time.
  • Relax.

10. Bhujangasana: Snake Pose:

  • Lie down on the floor on your belly.
  • Keep your hands on the ground besides your chest.
  • Place your head on your chin and look straight.
  • Place your baby in front of your head, look at him, call out his name or sing rhymes for him.
  • Lift up your chest, upper body off the floor.
  • Stretch your upper body and look upwards.
  • Relax.
