Every mother, especially a first-time mother will always worry about her supply of breast milk at some point in her breastfeeding days. No doubt that adequate breast milk supply is important to provide the baby all the necessary nutrition and lack of it can put the baby at a high risk of malnutrition, but in most cases, mothers always produce enough breast milk for their child. However if you still want to make sure that you produce enough breast milk for your infant, here are a few ways to increase its supply naturally.
Warm compress massage
Low blood circulation in the breast could lead to a lack in breast milk supply. To combat this use a warm compress on your breasts before you feed your baby. Begin by massaging your breasts for about five minutes before you start breast feeding. Now dip a cloth in warm water and squeeze out the excess before you use it to gently massage your breasts. Continue this for about 10 minutes and then go and nurse your baby quickly.
Dieting post pregnancy could take a toll on your breast milk production. Ensure you eat enough and drink plenty of water to keep up the breast milk supply. Also watch out for what you eat as this also influences the supply. Make sure you consume dairy products as they are an excellent source of calcium. Fresh fruits and vegetables will provide you with all the necessary minerals and vitamins. Also include lean meat and wholegrain foods.
Foods that are known to increase breast milk
Fenugreek seeds (Methi): Fenugreek seeds have been used since ancient times to increase breast milk supply. This natural ingredient when included in your diet can make a difference within a week too. All you need to do is soak fenugreek seeds in a cup of water and leave it overnight, then in the morning boil the water with the seeds and then strain them out and drink it.
Fennel seeds (Saunf): Fennel seeds act as a catalyst that helps boost the milk production. Just add one spoon of fennel seeds to a cup of water and allow it to steep for 30 minutes. Now strain this water and drink it two times a day for a month. Apart from this, you can also try adding fennel seeds to your diet as much as you can.
Garlic: Garlic can stimulate lactation. Research says that mothers who ate garlic could feed for longer and the babies also seemed to like the flavour of the milk. To use this remedy, grate garlic cloves and boil them in one cup water until it reduces in quantity. Now add a cup of milk to the mix and boil it again. Remove this mixture from the heat and add in half a spoon of honey and strain it. Drink this concoction every morning during your breastfeeding days.
