Everybody talks about things to do and foods to eat when you’re trying to get pregnant. But it is just as much important to know about the things you should completely avoid when you’re planning a baby. No matter how hard one tries, some couples find it difficult to conceive. If such is the case, the following reasons could be contributing to it. Here is a list of things you must avoid when planning a pregnancy.
No doubt lubricants can enhance sexual pleasure but using a lubricant may be a bad idea if you’re trying to conceive. The vagina naturally produces acidic secretions that can kill sperm but it is the alkalinity of the cervical mucus that protects this sperm. Studies have shown that using vaginal lubricants prevent the sperm from reaching the cervical mucus quickly thus causing them to die in the acidic environment to the vagina. Ditch those external lubricants and increase foreplay instead.
Several studies have often linked caffeine consumption to a failure to conceive. Any health care professional will always warn a woman about her caffeine consumption when she’s planning a pregnancy. Ideally you should not have more than 200 mg of caffeine a day. This includes all your sources of caffeine including coffee, chocolate, soda, energy drinks etc.
Alcohol effects pregnancy in general. Drinking even small amounts of alcohol can hamper your chances of getting pregnant. Further on, if you get pregnant, it can affect your foetus and also increase the risk of miscarriage.
Smoking is known to lower the sperm count of a man. Other than that smoking can severely affect your overall health.
Fish high in mercury
It is also recommended to avoid fish with high mercury. This metal usually settles in your body and doesn’t flush away soon. This can then affect your chances of getting pregnant. Avoid fish like shark, mackerel, swordfish and tilefish.
Chemicals (such as those present in detergents, perfumes cleansers etc.)
It is also recommended that you stay away from certain chemicals such as the ones present in perfume, cleansers and detergents. These products have chemicals that can easily get absorbed in your skin and can have a toxic effect on fertility.
If you take several prescribed medications, you should get them checked with your doctor when you’re trying to conceive. Sometimes these medications can be the reason why you’re not getting pregnant.
Extreme temperature can affect the vitality of sperm. Hot tubs exhibit such hot temperatures. This can damage or destroy the sperm. Try to avoid hot tubs and saunas when you’re trying to conceive.
