While meditating, always try to keep your eyes open, as open eyes can make you feel more present in the situation. You can soften your gaze, and concentrate, but try to have a clear vision of the things. It will help you concentrate all your thoughts in a certain place. But yes, if you think practicing meditation with closed your eyes is more comfortable, then feel free to do so. Being comfortable is the basic need for meditating successfully.

Try and keep a gap of 30 minutes between smoking and meditating. This is because if you smoke immediately before meditating, you cannot hold your breath for long.
