Not many of us are familiar with Noni. Well, it’s a fruit! It is also known as hog apple, Indian mulberry, cheese fruit, and morinda. Noni is basically a tropical fruit, which is native to Southeast Asia. Regarded as highly nutritious food, it comprises of large amounts of Vitamin C, Vitamin B3, Vitamin A and potassium. It also contains small amount of calcium and sodium. It is also loaded with several phytochemicals, flavonoids, amino acids, fatty acids, antioxidants and nitric acid. All of these contribute to its various health benefits.

For centuries now, noni has been used for its medicinal properties. Stimulating the immune system, it prevents several health issues. Its antibacterial property fights the harmful bacteria while its analgesic and anti-Inflammatory properties decrease pain and inflammation. It treats  joint pain, migraine, and headaches. Noni also inhibits tumor growth and prevents cancer, gout, eczema, high blood pressure, diabetes, fever, enlarged spleen, etc.

Noni has a long list of health benefits but as we all know, benefits are usually accompanied by side effects and noni is no exception. Excessive or prolonged consumption of noni or drug interactions may lead to several health complications. Given below are a few side effects that are likely to result from the excessive dosage of this fruit.

1. Kidney Problem:

Noni has a high content of potassium in it. It increases potassium level in the blood. This can lead to serious problems, especially for people with kidney diseases. The use of it inhibits the excretion of potassium. So those with kidney disorders should avoid using noni in all its forms.

2. Digestive Side Effects:

Excessive use of noni can upset your digestive system, causing diarrhea, indigestion, bloating (full, tight or swollen abdomen) and other gastrointestinal issues.

3. Coughing And Breathing Problem:

Not everyone experiences this problem, but in some cases, noni consumption can lead to shortness of breath and coughing. It is advisable to consult your doctor if you face such issues.

4. Unsuitable For Diabetics:

Noni contains high amount of sugar. Diabetics should be careful as the consumption of it can increase their blood sugar level. If you are suffering from diabetes, be sure to consult your doctor before you consume noni.

5. Unsafe For Pregnant Or Breast Feeding Women:

Pregnant or nursing women should avoid noni consumption as it can lead to miscarriage and other difficulties. In fact, earlier noni was used for abortions. Nursing mothers too stay off noni to prevent problems with their baby’s health.

6. Liver Disease:

Noni can harm your liver or may worsen the existing liver diseases because of its hepatoxic property. So, if you suffer from any liver disease, it is better that you stay away from noni.

7. Causes Heavy Periods:

Some women experience heavy menstrual flow during the consumption of noni. One should check their dosage or consult their doctor in such cases.

8. Rise In Blood Pressure:

Several medications taken to control blood pressure raise potassium level in blood. Using noni can result in excessive amount of potassium in the blood, which may cause heart damage or worsen already present heart diseases. It is advisable to consult a healthcare provider before taking noni if you suffer from high blood pressure.

9. Skin Problems:

Some people experience skin related problems, such as boils, acne, itching, spots and rashes from the use of noni. Quick medical attention is needed in such conditions.

10. Enhances Blood Thinning:

Noni increases the effect of blood thinning medications, such as warfarin or other medications, which have anticoagulant property. Supplementing noni with other blood-thinning medications can cause excess bleeding or hemorrhage. Therefore, one should avoid the use of noni before surgeries.

Everything in nature has two sides—one good, one not so much. The side effects of noni do not mean that you should never consume it! But it means that you should exercise caution. So be careful and stay healthy!
