Computers have infiltrated into almost every layer of human life. From teenagers to the elderly lot, everybody uses some sort of computing device—be it the PC, iPad, laptop or mobile, etc. Our work, social life, entertainment, news—everything revolves around these devices today. While using computers is both necessary and useful, it has some flip sides as well. Whether you use a laptop or a desktop, staring at the screen for a longer period of time strains the eyes. This eventually leads to headaches and blurred vision. In medical terminology, this problem is referred to as Computer Vision Syndrome or CVS.
Ways To Deal With CVS:
Regardless of age and gender, a majority of computer users suffer from this syndrome. Thankfully, there are several ways to cope with this condition. Resort to the methods mentioned below, to cope with eye strain and other physical conditions triggered by staring at the computer screen for a longer period of time.
1. Use Proper Lighting:
The lights used in computer rooms are often responsible for eye strain. It is a misconception that you have to use bright light in the room to stare at computer screens. Harsh bright lights can be hard on your eyes and lead to strain. Use soft lights or window blinds to get the required amount of sunlight during daytime.
2. Get Rid Of Environmental Glare:
You may be unaware that eye strain and the resultant headache you suffer from while working in front of the desktop is actually caused by the reflections of the bright surfaces in the area! It can be the wall or cabinet beside the desktop. If the computer screen is reflecting light, use a quality anti glare screen.
3. Tweak Screen Display Settings:
If you find the default display resolution and settings of the laptop or desktop screen unsuitable, tweak them. The LCD and LED screens come with various settings like brightness, contrast and color temperature adjustment. Some displays come with preset modes like reading, games, web, etc. You may also use display calibration software to get the right setting.
4. Adjust Text Size And Hue:
The default text size displayed on the PC screen may be unsuitable for you. You can always enlarge the default text size and color. Changing the font to make it more legible is also an option. The same thing can also be done in web browsers. It will help keep your eyes relaxed.
5. Take Breaks When Possible:
No matter how much you adjust the lights and screen display settings, staring incessantly at the PC screen will make your eyes tired. So, whenever possible, take a break and try avoiding staring at the screen for too long at a stretch.
6. Keep The Screen Clean:
There are some people who never bother to keep the laptop or desktop screen clear. If you are among them, you are mostly responsible for eye strain! The dust, dirt and smudges that get accumulated on computer screens make reading harder. So, keep the laptop or desktop display screen clean.
7. Look At The Right Angle And Position:
You may suffer from eye strain because you are looking at the computer screen from the wrong angle. Correct the sitting posture and maintain one and a half foot distance between screen and your eyes to evade eyes strain or blurred vision.
8. Use Suitable Glasses:
If using an anti-glare screen on the monitor is not doing the needful, consider getting specialized glasses to use during PC usage.
9. Use Soothing Eye Packs:
To give some respite to your tired eyes, you can apply some home made natural eye packs on them. Using chilled slices of cucumber or potato on your eyes can relieve the fatigue
10. Provide Visual Relief:
If your work involves spending long hours in front of the computer, give your eyes some relief without walking away. After working and staring at the screen for some time, look at a distant object for a few seconds. Then resume your work. Try this a few times every hour.
These simple tips are often overlooked by those who sit for long hours in front of the computer. They seem simple, but they are sure to reduce the strain on the eyes. Remember, your eyes are the window to the outside world, and to care for them is your responsibility.
