10 Effective Home Remedies For Cradle Cap

If you are a new mother, the well-being of your child is paramount to you. As a mother, it is important that you understand all that your infant may have to deal with. Medically known as seborrheic dermatitis, cradle cap is one such problem you may be dealing with. It is a fungal infection common among infants. It does not harm and is temporary but can surely alarm you as a mother. It appears on the scalp as thick yellow or may be white or brown crust. Apart from the scalp, it can also affect the eyelids, ears, groin and nose.

1. Mild Shampoo:

Washing the baby’s hair every few days with a mild shampoo will loosen the scales and prevent new build up. Strong shampoos are not recommended as it can harm the baby’s tender skin. Apply mild shampoo gently and rub with a clean cloth or with your fingers. Rinse the water and pat it partially dry.

2. Rubbing Oil:

Rubbing a few drops of coconut oil will help to remove the flakes. Applying a few drops of oil on every alternate day will keep the head greasy and prevent the scabs from reoccurring. After applying the oil, use a comb to gently comb the hair to remove the scabs. Let the oil soak in for a couple of hours to make it easier for the scabs to come off.

3. Apple Cider and Vinegar:

Prepare a mixture of apple cider and vinegar and spray it on the scalp. It works wonders. Spray the mixture on the affected areas and leave it for 2-3 hours. The smell will go away once it is dry and so will the flakes.

4. Wash Cloth:

Gently clean the affected area, whether it is the scalp, ear or eyebrows, with a clean cloth. It is a wonderful remedy for treating cradle cap.

5. Vaseline:

Petroleum jelly, also known as vaseline works wonders to treat cradle cap. Apply a thick coat of Vaseline on the affected area and leave it overnight. The next morning, you will be surprised to see the scabs gone for good!

6. Hydrating the Skin:

Cradle cap usually appears when the skin cannot preserve water. So, it is necessary to keep the skin hydrated. After bathing your baby, rinse off the soap properly and pat the body dry keeping it partially wet. It is recommended to apply an ointment or oil post bath to keep the baby’s delicate skin properly hydrated. But do not offer water to drink. Breast milk or formula contains adequate amount of water for your baby.

7. Baking Soda:

Applying a mixture of baking soda with water on the infection gives relief to it. Leave the mixture for a while and rub it with a comb to remove the flakes. It is one of the best home remedies for cradle cap.

8. Tea Tree Oil:

Applying a mixture of tea tree oil and almond oil is effective in treating cradle cap. The mixture can be prepared by taking the tea tree oil as the tenth part of the almond oil. Stir it well and apply on the infected area and leave it for 5 to 10 minutes. Wash it off with a mild shampoo. But do remember that tea tree oil on its own is toxic. So, it should always be diluted before using.

9. Breast Milk:

Apart from providing your infant with all the nutrition he needs, breast milk can also be used to treat cradle cap! Applying the breast milk on the affected area is a superb remedy. Let it soak and do not wash instantly. The cradle cap would disappear later for sure.

10. Mineral Oil:

Apply mineral oil on the scales and leave it for some time. Allow it to soak for at least a couple of hours. After which, it can be washed off with a mild shampoo. Repeating it for a couple of weeks will help to remove the cradle cap effectively.

Cradle cap shows up most often during the early months of life and usually goes away on its own with time. However, some children do suffer from it for longer. Cradle cap is a common condition, but as a worried parent, there is no harm in seeing a doctor, if you are unsure of its severity.
